Louth Workers’ Party candidate Peter Short said neither a Fianna Fáil nor a Fine Gael led government can be trusted not to implement the proposed closure of the Accident & Emergency departments at Louth County Hospital and Monaghan Hospital which had emerged today from a leaked HSE document.
Mr. Short said that the present Fianna Fáil / PD coalition had destroyed the health service but that Fine Gael and Labour in the past had also neglected healthcare and had overseen the closure of hospitals. He also said that Sinn Féin, who obtained the leaked report, were only waiting to jump into bed with Fianna Fáil if they get the opportunity.
He said that already Fianna Fáil, and in particular Dermot Ahern, was trying to distance himself from the leaked report which the Workers’ Party candidate described as a ‘hatchet job on an already feeble health local service”.
“The HSE want to turn
Louth County Hospital into a glorified nursing home with neither Accident & Emergency nor specialist services. It is clear that Fianna Fáil are aghast that their plan has been leaked before the election and that they want to close the A&E at Dundalk and Monaghan to save a mere €7.2 million which is just one-sixth of what they wasted on the now abandoned e-voting machines”
“Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda is already having difficulty coping with the demands on it’s A&E services and the closures proposed in this report would inundate that hospital causing widespread suffering and misery for patients and endangering”.
“This plan was hatched at the behest of the outgoing government so that they could to do the same as they did in 2002 and replace their election promises with swingeing cuts across the board. They simply cannot be trusted”, declared Peter Short.
