WP mark centenary of African National Congress

100th Anniversary of African National Congress

The Workers’ Party of Ireland sends congratulations to the African National Congress on the occasion of its centenary celebration. The Central Executive Committee and cadres of the WPI salute the heroic struggle of the ANC in its battle for national liberation, freedom and independence and against racism and apartheid – a cause supported by progressive humanity. The resilience of the ANC in the face of a brutal racist regime that was aided and abetted by the imperialist powers is a tribute to the people of South Africa, their resistance to oppression and their desire to build a genuinely democratic and united South Africa.

The Workers’ Party of Ireland congratulates the ANC on exceeding its campaign to have one million members by the time of its centenary celebrations. The WPI also takes this opportunity to send greetings and solidarity to the ANC and its Alliance partners, the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) recognising 90 years of the SACP and the enduring commitment and struggle of South African communists. We also extend our solidarity on the recent 50th anniversary of Umkhonto We Sizwe and to those who gave their lives for the liberation of South Africa.

Irish workers were staunch supporters of the ANC throughout the anti-apartheid campaign. Our Party welcomed the overthrow of the apartheid regime and the democratic breakthrough of 1994. We salute your struggle and the on-going determination of the ANC to assert its historic values, wherein the ANC and its alliance partners will transform South Africa and enshrine and uphold the principles of the Freedom Charter as a vision for social and economic progress.
