Waterford City East Workers Party representative Joe Tobin has called on Bus Éireann to scrap its plans for major cutbacks in the city's bus services.

Joe, who is himself a Bus Éireann bus driver said, "Bus Éireann was set up to serve the people of Ireland, to provide them with an adequate bus service that they can trust in and rely on. However these proposed bus cuts are just another blow to the most vulnerable in our society".

"These proposed cuts will leave the people of Waterford with a limited service after 7.00pm. The areas to be affected include Ballybricken, Hillview, John's Park, Ballybeg and Brownes Road. These cuts leave the people of Waterford feeling let down and deserted".

"This predicament was all brought about by the mismanagement of the people's money by our government. We, in the Workers Party strongly condemn this governent and their priorities".

Mr. Tobin is calling on the government to invest money in our public
services. "In other EU countries" he states "the government subsidises the public transport system as they see it as vital infrastructure. Is this not the time to show the world that we are going backward instead of moving foreword?"

"Bus Éireanns hands are tied by government ideology. They have the want and the drive to provide services for its customers yet the government continue to rebuff them.

"The Workers Party recognises the need to get people out of their cars and onto public transport. This will not only secure the public transport that we already have but allow the company to grow. Other positive effects will be lower carbon emissions and less money being spent on unnecessary motor expenses".
