The Workers’
Party have said that major job losses such as that announced by Dell in Cherrywood, Dublin and at Limerick will damage the local economy
in their respective areas as well as being a blow to the 250 or so workers affected by the redundancies.
Workers’ Party spokesman
Frank Hayes said that the job losses needed to be looked at in conjunction with other large-scale redundancies in recent times
which clearly pointed to a country entering recession.
“For sections of the media and the
number crunchers in the big money markets and stock exchanges these are mere statistics, but behind those statistics are real
people and families that have to face an uncertain future unsure how they will pay their mortgages and other loans. The boom
would seem to be well and truly and the bust side of the cycle is upon us, just another side effect of capitalism”,
said Frank Hayes.
“This is even more incredible when one considers that
the Dell layoffs are not related to any decline in profits. Dell recently made
€27.1 million from the sale of their Bray factory on top of an operating profit which had increased by almost €5
million in just a year to €15.8 million. The company is sacrificing people’s
jobs and livelihoods for no good reason other than sheer stinginess”, said Mr. Hayes.
