The Workers' Party have said that the latest poll on the Lisbon Treaty shows that the more people are becoming informed about what the treaty is about, the less they like it.

Addressing a meeting of party members from Munster and South Leinster, Workers' Party spokesman on the Lisbon Treaty Padraig Mannion said that the poll in today's Sunday Business Post (27/04/08) makes it clear that the adoption of the revived EU constitution is no longer a foregone conclusion and that everything is to play for between now and polling day on the referendum, Thursday 12th June.

"There has been a dramatic drop in support for the treaty according to this poll.  The Workers' Party believes that the reasons for this are two-fold.  Firstly people are gradually becoming more informed about the treaty, even though most people are still in the dark due to government misinformation and lack of real information.  Secondly I believe that the recent revelations of leaked e-mails and attempts to manipulate public opinion through hiding 'bad news' has made people question the government's line", said Mr. Mannion.

The Workers Party said that the government's assumption that it was dissatisfaction among the farming community that was driving the increased opposition to the Lisbon Treaty was too glib.  "This may well be a factor, but the swing is too large to simply be put down to the farming community alone.  Public awareness is growing and the people don't like what they see in the Lisbon Treaty", he said.
