THE WORKERS' PARTY OF IRELAND

Unemployment Soars

Employment figure reaches 5.5% or almost 200,000 people.

The Workers' Party has expressed alarm at the latest increase in unemployment which show an increase of more than 8,500 in March 2008 with just under 200,000 people now unemployed.

Waterford Workers' Party Councillor Davy said that the rise should set alarm bells ringing in all sectors of the economy but that once again it was working class people who were paying the price for the economic ills of Wall Street and the international stock markets.

Cllr. Walsh said the increase in the South-East was particularly troubling with a 7.2% increase in an area with already above-average unemployment figures.
