THE WORKERS' PARTY OF IRELAND

Kosovo breakaway will have grave consequences

Move is illegal under international law and breaches UN Security council resolution 1244

The Workers’ Party has said that the unilateral declaration of independence of the self-proclaimed Kosovo parliament is in violation of international law and the party has warned that the support for the move by the United States, NATO and the European Union will have grave consequences in the Balkans region and internationally.

“The US, EU and NATO are in fact breaking their own rules as well as those of international law.  They were the authors of United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 1244 which set in train a process which was to decide the future of Kosovo-Metohija.  The declaration of independence is a flagrant violation of that process which was being overseen by Mr. Marti Ahttassari who had previously been involved in the Northern Ireland peace process as one of those overseeing the question of weapons decomissioning”.

“The latest move is part of an ongoing relentless attack on the sovereignty rights of the Republic of Serbia of which Kosovo and Metohija is an integral part and is a continuation of the policy of demonisation of and destruction of the Serbian nation and people which the US has led for the past two decades.  The West was instrumental in fomenting civil war in Yugoslavia in the first place by its precipitous recognition of the breakaway Croatia, ignorant of the ethnic mix of that country and of the desires of other peoples in the region”

“The visit yesterday by the EU foreign minister Mr. Javier Solana, who as NATO General Secretary oversaw the carpet bombing of Serbia and Kosovo in 1999 can only be seen as a gross act of provocation by the European Union”.

“The Workers’ Party calls on Ireland to uphold international law and to not to support this adventure by the breakaway Kosovo.  We further call on the Irish government to withdraw all troops serving under NATO command in Kosovo and Metohija as whatever fig leaf of a UN mandate had existed is now sundered by this unilateral action.  Furthermore the plan to send a contingent of gardaí to the region should also be axed”.
